Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio (bearing traces of the passage of Basilian monks all around its hills) and leads to Badolato, Medieval village founded by the Norman Roberto il Guiscardo (also an important Basilian settlement of the past).

Route

The stage starts in S. Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio (Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi) and ends in Badolato Borgo (Piazza Castello – Belvedere di Badolato) via the municipality of Isca sullo Ionio. The trail is characterised by pure landscapes, breathtaking sceneries looking onto the sea and fine natural resources (monumental trees, fiumare and mountain vegetation characterised by the typical maquis shrubland). Chief features of this stage are the ancient Medieval villages and their historical and artistic heritages. Basilian traces are nestled like precious stones all around the enchanting landscape. Along the trail, in the proximities of monolith U Cantuni e San Gianni, are the ruins of a small Basilian church and a century-old tree with lush foliage. Once arrived at the ancient village of Badolato, hikers can visit the small alleys and numerous churches.

During winter time, in case of floods of the fiumara, please follow the route along the provincial or municipal streets in order to cross the river via bridges.

Brief historical overview

S. Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio was founded around the X and XI century in the proximities of a Basilian monastic grange. Many evidences of this historical period can be found all around the hills of the village. Only a few ruins of the old Chiesa di San Nicola di Cammerota are still visible. The Chiesa dell’Assunta al Campo is also of Basilian origins.

Isca

Badolato is a Medieval village founded by the Norman Roberto il Guiscardo in 1080. Just like S. Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio, this village used to be a Basilian settlement, as attested by the Chiesetta della Sanità in the city quarter of S. Isidoro, featuring a fresco from the late Byzantine period. It is also recommended to pay a visit to the Chiesa dell’Immacolata, the Chiesa di S. Andrea Avellino, the Chiesa di Santa Caterina and the 17th century convent of S.Maria degli Angeli. In the latter features two wooden sculptures by Fra Diego da Careri in its church: a crucifix with the body of Christ carved out of a single piece of wild pear wood and the majestic statue of Santa Maria degli Angeli, sculpted out of a great olive tree’s trunk and recently restored in Gerace (thanks to the national venture “Arte e Fede” – Art and Faith – coordinated by master restorer, Giuseppe Mantella).
