Il Cammino Basiliano
A spiritual journey fuelled by art and biodiversity that takes us along irreplaceable itineraries, once travelled by the Oenotrians, Bruttians, Greeks, Romans and Normans.
From Lauria to Reggio Calabria: a 81-stage itinerary that unwinds over 1500 kilometres of trails. It retraces the ancient tracks of Italo-Greek monks (inspired by the life of Saint Basil) and remote indigenous, Greek and Roman remains, without forgetting the strong Norman cultural influences at the heart of the Mediterranean Sea
It is the “Cammino Basiliano” (The Way of Saint Basil): a journey filled with history, art and religion across the mountain chains of Pollino, Sila, Serre Calabre and Aspromonte – revealing a fascinating synthesis of the many diverse realities coexisting in Basilicata and Calabria..
A narrative that settles the eternal quarrel between nature and culture, great millenary civilisations and a virgin, wild land that nurtures the spirit of the passionate traveler.
From the Alto Ionio Cosentino to the Strait of Messina, the traveller remains anchored to the true, pure sprit of one of Europe’s greenest regions; charmed by remote places of worship, castles, artistic monuments and historical remains: relics of the fertile succession of many different populations and cultures.
Thus, the origin of this “Road to the East in the West” was born – in the very region that gave the Italian peninsula its name. On one side monasteries, churches and fortresses of oriental feel (evoking places like Mount Athos, or landscapes akin to those of Armenia, Syria or Turkey), and on the other castles, churches and monasteries that recall a western aesthetic, like that of Germany, France, Belgium, Spain and England.
Eastern and Western monks and saints, Greek and Latin heroes and medieval Paladins walked these lands. It is a spiritual journey, a way to discover the ancient roots of Europe in the Mediterranean sea.
