The Cammino Basiliano Association
A spiritual journey fuelled by art and biodiversity
The Cammino Basiliano Association (Associazione Cammino Basiliano Ets) was created to encourage the revival of ancient trails and to promote Calabria as a region in harmony with nature, capable of offering extraordinary cultural syntheses of thousand-years-old civilisations.
We propose a full and complete narration of one of the most alluring and diverse territories of the Mediterranean Sea, in support of a kind of “slow tourism”, in line with the sacred silence of the Basilian monks, whose trails we followed up until the border with Basilicata and down to the legendary Strait.
We went across the Ionic side of the Appennino Calabro (with the future aim of expanding the trails’ network along the Tyrrhenian side) and admired the exceptional “medleys” originated from the encounter of the Oriental Byzantine culture with the Latin, Occidental one: the result is a spiritual journey fuelled by art and biodiversity, that takes us along irreplaceable itineraries, once travelled by the Oenotrians, Bruttians, Greeks, Romans and Normans.
A beautiful mosaic that wishes to satisfy man’s innate desire for a balanced relationship with nature. It allows the visitor to discover an ancient land of undeniable historical, environmental and touristic value.
By means of the creation of a cultural and naturalistic network, we hope to get many different kinds of hikers involved in the valorisation, preservation and eco-sustainable fruition of our landscapes, historical hamlets, places of worship and archeological remains. We wish to attract visitors from other regions of Italy and from abroad, entertaining them with stories from a variety of communities where ancient traditions are still alive (for example the very interesting “arbëreshë” and “grecaniche” cultures), and numerous other illustrious historical figures that breathed the pure air of our mountains.
We believe in the strength of our thousand-years old heritage. Once the multifaceted and rich nature of Calabria will finally be revealed, it will encourage a whole series of economical and socio-cultural developments throughout the whole region, generating new job opportunities in the “green” and “cultural” sectors, with full compliance with the sustainability agenda of ONU 2020/2030: SDGs, Sustainable Development Goals.
