Brief historical overview
Savelli is a village of recent origins, on the boarder of the Sila plateau. Completely surrounded by conifer forests, it originated in the area of Scalzaporri from refugees’ settlements of people from Cosenza, following the earthquake of 1638. The villages was named after Princess Carlotta Savelli, who supported the new settlement’ constructions. It features an interesting road into the village, virtually intact, that from the Sanapite stream takes to the city centre. Abandoned mills and spinning mills are dotted all around the countryside.
Cammino Basiliano: Abbazia Florense
San Giovanni in Fiore is the largest centre of the Sila territory (with around 17.000 residents), renowned for its craftsmanship (wood and wrought iron) and production of handmade Armenian carpets. It is the site of the Abbazia Florense, one of the larges religious buildings of Calabria, founded by Gioacchino da Fiore (1130-1202), abbot and theologian mentioned in the XII Canto of Dante’s Paradise. Some of the most typical dishes are: cabbage soup, potatoes and beans and the famous pita ‘mpigliata, a dessert that is in the process of receiving the DOP certification.
